Wednesday, June 18, 2008 IMA STRAIGHT :) Bisexual or sexually fluid. Two different terms, same concept. Perhaps the only difference lies in the degree of our perception of being queer. Well, let's take it from a lesbian point of view. The term ‘Bisexual’ has a more serious and heavy connotation, often with obligatory roles attached to it. When a bisexual decides to turn straight, does that make her a betrayal? When a bisexual continues to sit on her little picket fence, does that make her an indecisive bitch? A bisexual does not exactly have the liberty to choose what she wants. She may be liberated from societal norms when she decides to fall for a girl, but right from the beginning, she is also condemned as someone who sits on the fence and does not know herself. She is someone who wants the best of both worlds. She is someone with an identity crisis. She is someone who can convert her sexuality easily, and therefore, she is the person to blame for when her relationship falls apart. Well, basically, she should not even be in the gay world. Control-z and she is back to square one. Period. Sadly, the situation in the other team is almost quite similar. The straight world condemns that poor girl too. "Can't she make up her fucking mind?" is one common comment hurled at her. Again, people see her as a potential cheater. Cheating on anyone with a girl is innate and easy. To top it all up, there are usually no strings attached (unless you end up in a twining cobweb of emotions). The straight people feel that she must belong somewhere. Perhaps to some, liking a girl is sinful. They began throwing religious and moral ideas in, hoping that they can talk some sense in her. Well, then again, anyone can say anything to her. It is her life after all and should not be manipulated by anyone in any sense. No one has the right to comment about her life. She lives for herself. While all these may be true, there are some things which are undeniable too. She is caught in a vacuum. She feels out of place. She belongs nowhere. She likes both but yet, it is only dilemma that she ends up with. She wants both, but she ends up with none. She loves her, but likes him too. Well she is like your living example of an oxymoron, caught in the biggest dilemma. But, what has she done wrong to deserve such condemnation? Perhaps, we should do a change in terms and save the poor girl. Let's just strip the ‘Bisexual’ label off her and call her sexually fluid. Doesn't that just made her ten times less guilty? Doesn't that just free her from the social stigma which most people have of a bisexual? Now, she seems to have more liberty and control over her life. It all boils down to the label. The perception is attached to the label people coin others. Hence, it begs the question, is bisexual merely just a pseudo-label, or is the term sexually fluid a quasi-bisexual? we are bounded by the endless list of labels we wished to be coined. interesting. ever wondered why?
